How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets Without Sanding or Priming

Now, on with the tutorial you came here for!

Materials Needed:

  • TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) Cleaner
  • Liquid deglosser or liquid sandpaperThis is the verbal deglosser we used.
  • General Finishes Milk Paint– We used 3 quarts of Seagull Greyness for the perimeter cabinets and 2 pints of Driftwood Grey for the island.
  • General Finishes Loftier Performance Peak Coat– We chose the apartment finish considering the less light a finish reflects, the less the woods grain in our cabinets would show. Nosotros applied iii coats of the topcoat on all cabinets and but used virtually 1/ii a gallon.
  • 6 inch pigment foam roller
  • Angled paint brush
  • OPTIONAL: Spray paint if you want to remove your hinges and modify the colour of them.
  • OPTIONAL Merely HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: these painter's pyramids (I discovered recently and then wish nosotros had them when nosotros painted these cabinets–they are crawly for any double-sided project)

At that place are so many detailed tutorials about how to paint your cabinets similar the professionals. They involve primer and loads of prep work. Some even require a pigment sprayer. That is not what I am going to give you.  I am going to tell yous how to paint your kitchen cabinets without losing your heed but WITH professional results.

Step ane: Exam Colors & Choose Your Favorite

Unfortunately, General Finishes doesn't sell small samples, but you lot can society pints here. It's worth ordering a few and really painting test swatches on your cabinets since colors tin can look then dissimilar depending on the lighting and surroundings of your home. I also exam 6 different colors in my Full Cabinet Transformation videos serial which you tin get FREE when y'all subscribe here.

I need to pause here to tell you how I institute out about this magical paint.

I originally thought we would need to transform our cabinets with gel stain (which would crave a DARKER color) and I reached out to General Finishes with some questions about their gel stain products. In the form of explaining what I wanted to practice, they mentioned their paint and explained that when you useGeneral Finishes Milk Paint in conjunction withGeneral Finishes High-Operation Acme Glaze, our kitchen cabinets would be EXTREMELY durable. Since I really wanted to lighten our cabinets, I was far more excited about the painting option! And then I ordered a few different colors in the pint sizes.

When the pints arrived, I could not wait to run across what they looked like on our cabinets. I mean, LITERALLY, I could not expect. I arrived home from work one afternoon, greeted my sweetness Attley and Avery and asked them if they wanted to picket me paint a little scrap. They did (they totally take after their momma and beloved all things crafty). I quickly, and rather sloppily, painted the three different gray colors on one of our upper cabinets.  I spent no more than two minutes doing it, and did non fifty-fifty endeavour to use proficient technique, etc.

I was BLOWN away with this paint when I painted on my test swatches.

Starting time of all, I was completely amazed by how well i quick coat completely covered our outdated oak cabinet. But what most impressed me most this paint is that I COULD Non SEE Pigment BRUSH MARKS. Seriously. At that place was not a brush mark to be seen on our cabinets. Information technology'southward amazing. AND it dried so speedily and smoothly. I was sold. There was no question that I wanted to paint our cabinets with General Finishes Milk Pigment.

Step two: Prep Your Cabinets

Remove all of your hardware. You volition also need to remove your doors and drawers if you desire to update your hinges (we spray painted our hinges). Only you can get out everything within of your cabinets since you don't demand to pigment the insides of your cabinets. Y'all just demand to pigment the doors (front and dorsum) and the frame of the cabinets.

Clean all of your cabinets, doors and drawers with a good cleaner similar TSP. Y'all desire to be sure any grease and crud is off of them then that your pigment adheres correctly.

Patch whatever holes that you will not exist reusing with spackle or wood filler and sand appropriately.

Lastly, wipe down your chiffonier boxes, chiffonier doors and drawers with a liquid deglosser or liquid sandpaper (this is the exact deglosser we used ). This is a quick wipe-downwards. You lot do not need to scrub the quondam stop off and get down to blank forest. In fact, your cabinets may non expect whatever different after you wipe them down—that is okay.

Stride 3: Paint

If yous are usingGeneral Finishes Milk Pigment, DO NOT SAND!  Do Non Prime number! Just get-go painting! We used the built-in benches on our deck to lay out our doors, which worked well. If you don't take a large space to work with, simply work in batches. I highly recommend using these painter's pyramids that I discovered recently. I wish we had them when we painted these cabinets–they are awesome!

We applied two coats of the Full general Finishes Milk Paint. We used a paintbrush for item work and a dense foam roller for larger surfaces. Nosotros used 3 quarts of the Seagull Grayness and 2 pints of the Driftwood. We also used almost 1/two gallon of the topcoat. This pigment gives first-class coverage and goes a long way. I did Non sand between coats of pigment because my terminate was nice and smooth. Simply you could opt to lightly sand before applying your second glaze.

Step 4: Apply the topcoat

After your pigment has dried for the correct amount of time (see details on the General Finishes can, but I can tell y'all this paint dries faster than whatever other pigment I have always used), y'all are prepare to apply the General Finishes Loftier-Performance Tiptop Coat. We applied the recommended 3 (yes 3) coats of the topcoat. Residue assured this stride moves adequately apace. Simply this topcoat is what gives the already durable paint an unbelievably durable finish.

Nosotros chose a flat finish because our cabinets had so much wood grain. A flat terminate reflects less calorie-free than a semi-gloss or gloss finish, so it makes the wood grain less visible. Delight do go along in heed that paint lonely is NOT going to eliminate wood grain. Merely you tin brand information technology less noticeable past choosing the flat end topcoat.

Y'all want to utilize sparse coats. I used a castor and would recommend it over a roller. If the topcoat is practical too thickly or pools in any areas, those spots volition dry with a yellow tinge. Three very thin, even coats is what you need!

I have also heard from many people who accept followed this tutorial to paint their cabinets with the Snow White color that the topcoat left a slight yellow cast on them. This is going to exist true for pretty much ANY poly topcoat. This is something I talk about more in my Total Chiffonier Transformation videos series which you lot can get FREE when you subscribe here. (Spoiler alert, I don't recommend that anyone use Snow White straight out the tin–I recommend mixing it with some other color).

Optional Pace: Paint your hinges

If you don't like the color of your hinges, yous can spray pigment them! It'due south way more economic than buying new ones and you can avoid having to make new holes in your cabinets and/or doors if new hinges are a different size. Our old hinges and screws were contumely–not a adept look with grey cabinets.  So, we spray painted our hinges AND the screws with Valspar Brushed Nickel Spray Pigment and topped them withValspar Satin Clear Coat.

Step 5: End Up

Once your superlative coat is dry, you can rehang your doors, replace your drawers and reattach your one-time hardware or supercede information technology with new hardware! We ditched our sometime hardware (not my manner) and replaced it with new handles and drawer pulls. We have a lot of cabinets and doors, then we spent just over $300 on hardware, but I recall it was well worth it.

That's it. We completed this project over the course of 2 weekends and many nights afterward piece of work. I am not going to prevarication, it is time-consuming only so worth the effort. I mean, Await at the transformation from painting kitchen cabinets.

DIY painted cabinets after

The photos below were taken 5 YEARS after we painted our kitchen cabinets while information technology was decorated for Christmas. They held up so, so well! Even the contractor who eventually replaced our backsplash with the one you see below was shocked and impressed by our results.

Now, I know there are LOTS of you out at that place that are going to read this and call up information technology sounds besides expert to be true and/or have a zillion other questions that I tin can't possibly answer in one blog post.We still go questions nigh this post almost every single day (in fact, it's the reason I finally had to turn my blog comments off a while back). Because though I detailed exactly how we transformed our oak cabinets with grey paint , people wonder how the process will work on dissimilar cabinets with dissimilar colors. So we get questions similar…

  • Can I use this to paint my laminate kitchen cabinets?
  • How do you recall the white paint color would work on my very dark cabinets?
  • Tin I apply this paint this over existing painted kitchen cabinets?
  • Did y'all REALLY not sand in between coats?
  • How much pressure level do I demand to utilise when I utilise the deglosser?

And so after seeing the need to address all these questions and after countless requests, I finally decided to create a video grooming series for those of you that have questions and concerns that just can't be answered in a single weblog mail. And when y'all subscribe, you tin can become it (and a agglomeration of other stuff) for Gratuitous!
